When creating the first three images, I was envisioning something similar to the shots attached below.

The Greatest

I decided to keep dance, Maddy that Sia has incorporated into her last few music videos. I wanted to keep something from her original pieces of work to make the clear distinction that it was a Sia song and style music video. However, I have changed it to suit a 2018 Commonwealth Games advertisement, which is held on the Gold Coast. I have used her as an athlete in this music video, with her competing in some of the events that will be held at the Commonwealth Games in 2018. These include:

  • Athletics
  • Running
  • Basketball
  • Swimming
  • Diving
  • Cycling
  • Gymnastics
  • Weight lifting

I have used a variety of shots to portray each sport. The main decision behind the sport music video is that I believe The Greatest is a powerful song that embodies being the best you can be. Although the actual meaning behind the video is quite different, as it is a tribute to Orlando. This meaning isn't directly explicit so it isn't too hard to mould it suit another type of music video and meaning.

Planning - Music Video

I have chosen to do my design task for a music video for The Greatest by Sia.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKSRyLdjsPA

I will be producing the design element of this task, assuming that Sia has approached me and decided to change her visual style. I will keep the main dance, Maddy in the shot but in a different setting. As many of Sia's music videos, including Chandelier etc, this is why I have decided to keep the girl dancing. However, I am thinking of changing the setting to a possible sport setting as the song is quite inspirational and motivational.

Self-reflection and evaluation:

Year 12 Film, Television and New Media Auteur Style Production
Please answer each question using complete sentences, including as much detail as possible to justify your responses.
1.  Reflecting on your completed production task:
·      Are you satisfied with the result?  And did it turn out as you had visualized it?

My completed film is how I visualized it from the beginning, and I am happy with the final result. This is one of my favourite tasks in FTVNM as I had a clear vision from the beginning of the planning stage up until the final editing stage. However, along the way there was a very new ideas and ways I could make it more like Tim Burton’s film, this included adding more dream scenes to correlate with his famous scenes or removing some shots that I deemed to be unnecessary.

·      Would you like to change or improve any aspects of your final film (storyline, shots, editing etc.)?

I am happy with the final film, however I would add another aspect to my storyline. I initially was going to have Penelope’s parents and use them for a flashback. During the filming, I decided that I wouldn’t need to use this, as the flashbacks from Charlotte were enough. However, reflecting upon this decision it is possible that these shots would have enhanced the film, adding another element to the overall product. Other from this, I am satisfied with the final edit of my film, Doubt.

·      If you could start the project again, what would you do differently?
I found that this one of my most time-managed and organized projects I have executed during my senior years in FTVNM. However, I believe that it would have been easier if I had more opportunities to film. As I was excited to film at my house, in the cane fields this also became and issue, as I am a boarder and had limited amount of time to travel home with my actors to film. I would have had more time if I changed my location for the filming. This being said, the cane field scenes are my favourite part of the entire film.

2.  Evaluating your production process, respond to the following points:
·      How did you use the planning documents effectively during production? (storyboards, shot lists etc.).
I used the planning documents but I could have possibly used them more effectively in order to understand where I needed to add more (e.g. dream scenes) earlier rather than later. Although storyboards were not on the required task sheet, I used a few to plan out my film and understand the direction I was going to take with it. After I had edited my film, I found that some of my shots were either shorter or longer than indented so I needed to make amendments to my shot list.

·      Were there any problems or difficulties during production and how did this affect your project. (Difficulties may include; shooting, technical, time-management, teamwork, absences or editing etc.);

I found this one of the best productions so I didn’t experience many difficulties in regards to the ones listed above. However, my production would have run smoother if I noticed what shots I was missing at an early stage. I realised this approximately a week and a half before the final was due, this did give me enough time to complete this film but it would have helped me to have it in the shot list earlier.

·      How did other people respond to your rough-edit? Did you use their feedback to make changes to the film?

I showed a few people my rough edit to see if they understood the direction the film was heading in. I was provided with feedback, which allowed me to change what needed to be changed in order for it to run cohesively. After my conference with Mr Andrews, I became aware of other changes I needed to make to my film. This conference consisted of adding more dream scenes, audio and some of my shots.

·      Discuss whether you undertook adequate and detailed reflection to support your work? (Look at your blogs and consider if it looks like a terms worth of work);

I updated my blog when there were changes or updates with my film. Some of the lessons didn’t require a blog post as there wasn’t any changes or amendments made to my film. Some of the lessons required me to watch over my film and change the colour palette or find the correct audio for my film. My blog has been updated when necessary and obtains the required work and my reflections for this production and term.

Updated Shot List:

My shot list has been updated so that it directly correlates with my final production. All shots have been ordered in the order of how they will be placed within the film sequence. The shots were also filmed in this order, except for the dreamtime shots that have been placed both in the order that they are in the film as well as at the end of the shot list as they were shot last.

I will be handing this finalised shot list in on Monday, along with my completed film and production schedule.

25/8/16

To film next week:
  • Scarlett's imagination in front of the green screen (place near painting)
  • Ruby - to use as a flashback (place before Scarlett leaves the house)
  • Add clouds / dreamy effects to the entire film - to align it with Tim Burton's style

This will be filmed during week 8. I will then edit it this week too so it will be ready for Week 10.

Filming - Week 5 weekend

I filmed all my shots on the weekend at my house and in the cane fields at Murwillumbah. I used Ruby Brown and Scarlett Fahey as my actors. It took a few hours to film all the scenes in my film but I am happy with how they have turned out.

When I was inside I used a soft box with blue cellophane over the top to give a cold, blue light on the actors. When outside shooting on the road and in the cane fields I used the natural light as carry lights did not enhance the shot.

I will now start editing my rough edit to show Mr Andrews by Friday. This conference will only allow me to show him the actual shots which will not accurately depict Tim Burton's style as a lot of this will be depicted through editing and colour correction. Once I have shown him the rough edit I will start my colour correction. I am happy with my progress for this film and I believe that this is the most organised I have been in terms of having my shots early as this will allow me to perfect my editing and colour correction. This is crucial as the colour correction and editing will mainly convey Tim Burton's style.

Cane Fields

As I will be using the cane fields to shoot most of my film, it is essential that an aesthetic field is chosen to enhance my film. The final shot of my film is a burning cane field, it is cane field burning season in Murwillumbah but I am unsure if one will be burning on Saturday evening. If not, I will use after effects to create smoke in the distance which will give a similar look. Hopefully this will look good in the final product as there is a significant symbol attached to the burning of the cane field which is detailed in my treatment.

It symbolises Charlotte's family who doubt her ability to make it as an artist. This represents them burning down her dreams, this is the final shot of the film so it is crucial that it is successfully executed.

Update

During this week I have been planning for the weekend where I will be shooting my entire film. I have been organising my shot and prop list. I will be using Scarlett Fahey to play Penelope and Ruby Brown who will be playing Charlotte.

I will be going to Murwillumbah to film the cane field scenes and using my house for the indoor scenes. The entire filming process will probably take a few hours. I need to ensure that all shots are coherent with my shot list so that I can follow the shot list when compiling the footage.

I will then be using Sunday - Thursday of week 6 to create my rough edit of the film which can then be shown to Mr Andrews on Thursday.

Hopefully all of the shots are successful so I do not have to re-do them. This will require detailed planning and precision on the day of filming.

Shot list

My shortlist has been arranged in the order of which everything will be shot. There are three main sections including; inside the house scene, flashbacks and running through the cane fields. It was quite easy to group the sections together - this will be the order of which it will all be filmed in. I aim to plan this week and film the flashbacks next week and hopefully the house scene. The cane field scene will be filmed the following week. This will allow me a sufficient amount of time to complete my rough edit in case I need to re-film any scenes.

Cane fields symbolism

I am envisioning this sort of sunset over the cane fields for my film. This would look great in the film if successfully executed! I am also hoping that there is cane burning on the day so I am able to have real smoke in the distance. If this is not the case, I will use after effects and photo shop smoke in the distance which will have the same effect. The symbolism attached with the cane fields adds another element to the story. The burning of the cane in the background represents her family and friends burning down her dreams and not believing in her as an artist.
